Memories

The dappled shadows danced over the foliage as she walked along the weathered garden path. Beating the coming chill of the approaching night was ever present in her mind. Why had she come back in the first place? This long-forgotten grove held nothing but painful memories.

When she’d left, she’d hoped they’d be erased by the bustle and noise of the city. Standing there in the ever-growing darkness proved the theory wrong. Her heart was weighed down by the memories, so she made no attempt to fight it.

She sunk wordlessly into the grass. That night could have been yesterday. She was young with a future full of promise, but now she was forever changed. And Morgan, Morgan would never share a moonlit stroll with her ever again.

He hadn’t listened when she said those creatures were not just children’s’ stories. They were real, and very dangerous. Still, he insisted this was the best place to view the full moon. For his foolishness, he’d paid the ultimate price. She’d escaped with her life, but could she really call it a life after what she’d seen?

She wiped the bitter tears from her eyes, stood up, and dashed back to the house without looking back. She’d been spared for a reason, and dwelling on what happened that night would solve nothing.

Yes, she would always miss him, but did it mean she had to stop living?

No, it didn’t.

Starting tonight, she would live for both of them.
