Jokester

Writing prompt for Jokester is no joke video.

He was never the most popular kid in school. He got by with decent grades and a few good friends, but nothing spectacular. Going into his first year of high school, he wanted to accomplish more. Now, he had a pretty good idea of what he needed to do.

He’d tried changing his look before and his attitude. That would be too obvious, and he wanted to make a big impact. This was not going to be a run of the mill high school reinvention. He was going to display a long hidden talent to the world.

He hurried into his sister’s room to share the news.

“I’m going to finally show everyone just how funny I am,” he said.

His sister rolled her eyes.

“You can’t just say you’re funny and hope everyone will believe you,” she said.

He left the room defeated. He knew she was right, but it wasn’t exactly what he meant.”

He wasn’t going to just be the class clown. He  he was really, truly funny. What he needed to figure out was how he could show that to the school without coming off as just a big joke.

It took some planning over most of the remaining weeks before school started. Finally, he was ready.

He woke up the morning of the first day of school. There was a huge grin on his face. But, his palms were sweating, and he wondered if he was doing the right thing after all.

“Does it really matter if I’m really funny?” he asked. “I guess I’ll see how I feel once I get to school.”

At school it was chaotic as soon as he stepped through the double doors.

Everyone had their faxes buried in schedules or catching up with friends. No one cared about who he was or who he’d been. They had so many other things to worry about.

As they day wore on, all his carefully rehearsed jokes and gags lay forgotten at the bottom of his backpack. He didn’t give them a second thought until he was stretched out on his bed at home.

All that careful planning for nothing,” he said. “Oh well, I’m not the same person I was last year. And, that’s okay.”

He didn’t need to reinvent himself after all, because there was nothing that needed to change in the first place.
