Spook-tober: Day 4

A Park to Thrill

His sister tugged eagerly at his hand.

“Come on,” she said. “You promised you’d take me to the fun house.”

This part of the carnival wasn’t very crowded. Everything was a little too faded and loud. There was a layer of grime that hadn’t been addressed in years. This might have been cool thirty years ago, but not now.

“Okay, let’s get this over with,” he said. They walked over to the ticket booth. “Two please.”

“Welcome home,” the bored man in a faded ill-fitting uniform said. He smiled and pointed to the entrance to the fun house.

“Well, that was weird,” he said as his sister pulled him along, and they ducked through the faded curtain.

At first glance, the hall of mirrors was nothing special. Several of the mirrors were cracked and missing, but there was an ornate silver mirror at the far end of the room. Their feet brought them to it, without conscious thought.

“It’s so pretty,” his sister said as she reached out to touch the glass.

A chill ran up his spine. “No don’t,” he said. He reached out and grabbed her wrist.

She pouted. “It’s just a mirror,” she said.

She pulled her hand free and touched the glass.

A loud whistle echoed through the room, and he watched in horror as she disappeared. A second later she was screaming and banging on the glass from inside the mirror.

He screamed. “Give her back!”

The room darkened, and a voice echoed from the darkness.

“You will earn her freedom, but it could cost you your own,” it said. “Are you ready to play?”

He nodded. “Anything, I’ll do anything!” he said. “Give me my sister!”

“As you wish!”

When the lights came back up two frightened faces pressed up against the glass.

They would be together for eternity for all to see.
