Spook-tober: Day 14

Toss in a Coin

One moment he was driving down a road with tight hairpin turns, and the next he was trudging through a thick fog bank. The others around him were as confused as he was.

“Where are we?” he asked, his voice hollow in the darkness.

“Looks like Purgatory to me,” someone answered.

He laughed at the absurdity of it. Who even believed in such things anymore? But, what else could it be? He clearly was no longer driving his beloved sports car.

As they ventured farther into the rolling fog an eerie sort of music rose through the air. His feet were compelled to match the beat. It was a funeral procession, and the irony wasn’t lost on him.

It might have been fun if they hadn’t died suddenly or horribly.

Out of the darkness an ominous glow appeared. He saw an ancient creature dressed in dark, ragged clothes walking toward them.

The air grew chill, the beat of the oppressive dirge increased, and the slap of oars on shallow water added even more tension to the grim scene.

The black clothed figure took a moment before beckoning them all forward.

He lurched on legs that were not his own and was shackled into a boat shoulder to shoulder with little room to move.

The figure spoke, “Since gold has fallen out of fashion, you must all earn your passage,” it said. “Row and row until your limbs break and your backs bend. This is now your unhappy end.”
