Spook-tober: Day 18

A Wisp in the Air

The children in the surrounding areas were disappearing, and the police were baffled. There was nothing connecting any of them. Nothing like this ever happened before, and the news was reporting it as the mystery of the decade.

Reports of strange lights off in the distance were clogging the phone lines, but panic as raging, and neighbor was turning against neighbor. They were scared, and things were only getting worse.

She was the darling of the town, the youngest daughter of the local newscaster. She was sweet, polite, and liked by all.

She’d slipped away from the sitter, wandered off, and now she was the latest in a string of disappearances.

Her friend was discovered hiding in a sheltered area of the local park. She was terrified, confused, and lonely. So many of her friends had gone missing, and she didn’t know what to do.

“The lights, the pretty fairy lights,” she said. “They scared me, but not the others.”

The officer took her by the hand. “Can you show me where the lights are?” he asked.

She gulped and nodded. “I’m scared. Keep us safe,” she said.

He nodded and squeezed her hand. “I’ll keep you safe,” he said. “I promise.”

They walked down the path as the sun was setting. A warm, soft glow beckoned them forward. Their pace slowed, but the lights got brighter and brighter.

The police officer saw the most beautiful flower he’d ever seen. A voice came to him.

“Will you trade your life for these children?” it asked.

He remembered his promise and squeezed the little girl’s hand. “Without a second thought,” he said. “Give us our children back.”

The voice laughed. “As you wish,” it said.

The officer screamed, but the children were safe.
