After lurking for so many years he decided he was going to take the leap and become an online influencer. His eyes shined with promise, and he couldn’t wait to get started. It was going to be epic!
He planned and planned, secured the social media accounts and handles he could, found the perfect place to create and film, and he was ready to get started.
He was nervous, but he had some luck and success with his first with his first video. It buoyed his confidence, urged him to create more content, and to extend his reach with his online presence.
He was confident, maybe too confident. He rushed out the videos, and the comments about the quality started rolling in. But it was only a few trolls. It was nothing he couldn’t handle. To him, it was a sign that he was truly making it. He loved it, but not everyone felt that way.
For the third time in two days, he posted his new video.
Later that night static snow appeared on his computer screen and a blurry face flashed across the screen for a split second.
He shook it off and decided he needed sleep. He left his phone on his nightstand and drifted off to sleep.
A few hours later a rapid series of beeps roused him from his sleep. With blurry eyes he scanned his messages, and a chill ran down his spine.
The messages were all from the same entity, but the e-mail address was obscured, and the IP address was his own.
The messages were savage and biting. A new one would appear as soon as he deleted the last one. They warned him if he ignored their warnings there would be a price to pay.
It wasn’t a concern to him. People liked his videos. He had nothing to worry about.
He shrugged, switched off his phone, and tried to go back to sleep.
Static snow enveloped his room and dragged him from his bed.
He clung to the covers and tried to pull them back over his head.
“You wanted to be part of the digital world,” a robotic voice said. “Since nothing bothers you, you will have your wish!”
The room swirled, and he found himself sucked inside his computer with no chance of escape.
