Spook-tober: Day 23

They Walk Beside Us

The house had a checkered past, but the price was too good to pass up on. Especially for an old house with character and a lot of land. She knew things might go bump in the night, but she wasn’t overly concerned by the idea.

She was happy enough with the large house, but what really drew her to this property was the large workshop set back on the parcel of land.

She was a sculptor by trade and looked forward to having a studio so close to home.

She added lots of lights, cleaned the windows until they shined, and made sure it was amply lit outside as well. She enjoyed working late, so this set up was nearly ideal.

She’d taken a few weeks off to move and settle into her new place, but she was eager to get back to work, and her inbox was now overflowing with requests for commissions.

She was working late on a particularly complex piece in dark marble. She spent hours planning and carefully chipping away at the stone. She was exhausted, and the walk back to the house was more than she cared to undertake at the moment.

She pulled out her couch, grabbed a few blankets, and laid down to get a few hours sleep before getting back to work in the morning.

She woke up to the sound of a hammer and chisel working as feverishly as she had earlier in the day. She assumed she was dreaming but found that she was wide awake.

She flicked on the light, gasped when she saw an inky, black shadow chipping away at her sculpture.

She shrugged. “Don’t mess it up,” she said.

The chiseling continued and she laid back down.

She’d take whatever help she’d get, paranormal or not.
