Spook-tober: Day 29

A Close Encounter

His phone flashed a warning that bad weather was ahead and assigned a new, safer route. The problem was it was a lonely back road full of switchbacks, small towns, cattle crossings, and long stretches of nothing.

After a long day of driving his eyes were growing heavy, and the rhythmic, pulsating lights in the distance weren’t helping.

He blinked to clear his head, and that’s when things got hazy.

It felt like mere moments had passed, but the clock on the dash read several hours later. The hazards were blinking, the lights were on, and none of the scenery looked familiar.

His head was thumping as he looked at the too bright display on his phone. The position of the car was several miles from where he last remembered them being.

What the hell happened?

A huge chunk of time was missing, and he felt drugged and dizzy with no explanation for it.

“What happened? Where are we?” echoed from the three other people in the car.

Everyone was shaken up, scared, and disoriented.

“I don’t know,” he said. He turned the key in the ignition and miraculously the car started. “We’re getting out of here!”

They drove in silence for a few minutes. As he rounded the next bend, a light appeared in the sky ahead of them.

“They’re back,” said a small voice from the backseat.

He turned around and peered cautiously at his youngest. “Who’re back, Honey?” he asked.

“The grey people from the big ship,” she said. “They wanted us to rest.”

He shook his head. Everything was still fuzzy, but his gut told him to believe her. What else could it be?”

The car stopped dead and the lights grew brighter. A spinning, silver disc hovered in front of the car before coming to rest and blocking their path.

Four beings with large eyes marched down the ramp, and the world went black once more.
