12 Days of Christmas…Fear: Day 7

Isolation Conundrum

She wanted to be free of distractions, but in turn it freed her from any sort of social life or social interactions. Her friends stopped calling; the messages hung dead in the air. She wanted no distractions, but she didn’t want to completely disappear.

She’d expected things to go back to normal once the all-consuming project was done with, but it hadn’t been the case.

I’ve come up for air, want to go get some dinner?

Hours passed, and she’d given up hope of getting a response at all. Then her phone beeped.

You must be joking…go eat alone.

The comments stung, but she’d had a deadline to meet. She’d respected them when they needed space, why couldn’t they do the same?

She shut down her computer, turned off her phone, gave up on dinner entirely, and went to sleep.

Hopefully things would be better in the morning.

Her dreams plagued her with fear and doubt. She slept so fitfully she didn’t hear her alarm in the morning.

She lept out of bed in panic, threw on some clothes, and frantically dialed her boss’s number to let her know she was going to be late.

The number was disconnected.

She tried again, blaming her sleep fogged brain for the misdial.

Same result.

There was no way it should be disconnected. She’d just talked to her yesterday.

She pulled up her recent calls, she had to be dialing it wrong.

She dropped her phone and collapsed to the ground in utter shock.

Last call: 5 years ago.

There was no way five years had passed. For her it was only a day. But what else could explain the disconnected line and her friends’ reactions?

She truly got no distractions, but now she was truly, utterly alone, and she had no idea where to go from here.
