Up and Away
For as long as she could remember she dreamed of flying. Not in a plane, helicopter, or a glider. She wanted to fly as the birds do and spread her wings and soar.
As she grew, she learned to keep her dream to herself, but she kept it alive in her heart. She knew it was a near impossibility, but she could still hope.
Her dreams were filled with the night wind and the beauty of the sky. She didn’t want to wake up most days, because it was as close as she would come. She tried to not let it bother her, but it really, really did.
It might be a myth, but it was her greatest dream. She sat in the library staring at stacks and stacks of books. She hoped for a clue, some promise of possibility, but no, what she wanted was all but fiction.
She hung her head, resigned to her life of forever walking upon the ground, when a small, spritely man in a velvet coat rushed over to her, and took her by the hand.
“You are looking in the wrong place, my dear,” he said. “I can give you what you seek!”
Her eyes sparkled as brightly as his own. “I’d give anything to fly,” she said.
“I’m betting on that, Sweet,” he said. His smile was bright, but with a hint of malice in his eyes.
She swallowed hard, but she really would do anything for this chance.
She ran with him through the library and out a door she didn’t even realize was there.
They stood in a fairy-circle, the wind blowing softly through the trees. Rays of light slanted through the clearing.
“What do I need to do?” she asked.
“Watch and wait,” he said. He clapped his hands and a golden mist began to flood the clearing.
Her heart pounded, a crushing sensation rushed through body, and she screamed.
He laughed with glee as a golden finch appeared on the ground in front of him. He scooped her up and stroked her delicate feathered head.
“You can fly as you wish,” he said, “but you’ll sing for me to earn the chance.”
A tiny tear slid down her cheek and landed on the ground. She could finally fly, but she’d never be free any longer.
