Spook-tober: Day 3

Clairvoyant

He didn’t believe in spirituality or thought it had any impact of his life. Still, this particular shop intrigued him. The air hung heavy near the door and the bits and bobs in the shop window sparkled and danced in the street light on the corner.

He was in a strange city with time to kill, and he wondered what was so unique about this shop. He was in the habit of walking the other direction when he saw that sort of blazing neon sign, but today he was compelled to stop and discover.

He hesitated for a moment in front of the bright blue front door. It creaked in protest and the bell was impossibly loud in the deserted, silent store. His stomach fluttered with anxiety, and he didn’t know why.

A voice called from the back part of the store and a shiver skittered across his skin and made goosebumps rise on his skin.

“I have been waiting for you,” she called. “Please come join me in the back, Ethan.”

He backed up for a moment, but he wanted to find out how she could have possibly known his name. He was from 3000 miles away.

He heard a snicker of disbelief from the back room. He jogged through the store passing stones, cards, books, and candles as he went. The laughing increased as he go closer.

A bodyless head stared at him from the table. Black eyes spun slowly around in the gaunt face.

“Do you even remember why you came to the city? She asked. “You aren’t as skeptical of all of this as you want to believe.”

His heart started to pound as a dark mist began to pool around his feet and the pendant around his neck began to glow.

The glammer of a common teen shed from his body like a second skin, and painful memories came flooding back to him.

“No, how dare you,” he said. “You lured me back here.”

“Of course,” she said. “Would you have come?”

“Of course not, and you can rot in hell,” he said. “I am not staying now.”

She cackled and the mist secured around his wrists and ankles like manacles.

“You will pay for your crimes, and I will take your place amongst the living!”
