Spook-tober: Day 6

Midnight

The flashlight bobbed eratically in his shaking hands. It had been his idea to walk this crumbling cemetary tonight, but he hadn’t planned on it being quite so ruined.

His heart pounded in his chest, but it was more from the impending fear of a twisted ankle than the anticipation of meeting a wandering spirit amongst the fractured headstones and protruding roots that littered the overgrown pathways.

Truthfully, he’d be surprised if they got any blips on their meters or had any experiences. This place was pretty bare physically and spiritually.

He held up his hand and the team came to a stop behind him. “RJ, come with me, the oldest graves are toward the back,” he said. “The rest of you stay here. If we’re going to get anything tonight, it will be back there.”

He threw a quick glance over his shoulder to be sure they heard him and continued down the path he was walking. Footsteps broke off from the main group and followed behind him.

RJ wasn’t much for talking, so he wasn’t concerned about the silence that followed him.

The trees got denser and the path crumbled away to nothing, but a faint blue light in the distance drew him on like a beacon. He knew there were no lights at this end of the cemetary.

It was probably just a group of teenagers trying to scare each other, but he wanted to find out anyway. This place wasn’t typically one of their usual haunts.

He started to hear whispers as he drew closer to the light he drew. What he found odd was that those whispers were coming from behind him as well.

“Really, RJ?” he asked. “I’d expect Gary to try to scare me, but not you.”

The high pitched scream in response stopped him dead in his tracks.

He turned around slowly and the blood drained from his face as he saw a banshee like entity rushing toward him with dark, raking claws outstretched.

The last thing he saw was a terrified RJ racing toward him as the world went black.
