Spook-tober: Day 18

Shelter

He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her in close as the meteor shower sent streaks or light flashing across the sky. They’d waited all year for this, and they were going to enjoy the evening now that it was here.

Her eyes glowed with excitement and admiration at the natural beauty of the display of nature. She lay her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes for a moment.

He swore and moved quickly away from her. Her head smacked into the ground and she came up swinging.

“What the hell was that?” She asked. “You said it was going to be romantic!”

“L…l…look,” he stutted and pointed to the sky.

A fireball exploded above them. Chunks of molten rock started to rain down on them, and she was on her feet in an instant.

“Run!” she said. “We need to find cover!”

He scrambled after her as she ran for the tree line. He was transfixed by the choas above them and twisted his ankle on an exposed tree root. He fell to his knees, and chunks of burning rock lit his shirt on fire and he howled in pain.

She reached for him, but the earth lurched under her feet. A gaping chasm opened up between them and her fingers brushed his before he screamed and fell into the blackness of the earth.

She scrambled for safety, but fell as she was pummled by chunks of rock and debris. She was desperate to survive, but luck was not on her side.

Another fissure opened beneath her feet, and she screamed as she plummeted into the darkness.

At least they wouldn’t be separated for long.

Who knew the end of the world would mean the end of their lives too?
