Spook-tober: Day 29

Shadows and Spirits

by Elizabeth Averay

Living in a haunted house, everyone thinks I should be terrified. I’m not. I have lived here my whole life. They say my hair should have been white by the time I was twelve. It’s still as black as ever.

This house is my home, and the spirits here are a peaceful bunch. I have had items move on their own or vanish entirely, only to turn up weeks later in the strangest of places. But that’s just the ghosts having fun and messing with me.

There are three permanent ghostly residents. They have been here long before I was born and will remain long after I die.

There are also the ghosts that are passing through. I like to think of it as my house being like a halfway house, and the three permanent spirits are their guides to whatever comes next.

Sometimes nasty ghosts arrive, but they never last for long. The three ‘originals’ chase them off; but not before they let us know they’re evil. They have given me nightmares of demons coming to take us away, or family members being stolen in the most horrific fashion. Only one has caused actual harm – my brother woke up to find claw marks down his back and across his shoulders.

On the whole though we and them just live comfortably. And I know when it’s my friendly ones that are pranking me because they do so at all times of the day and night. The repulsive ones only ever act when it is dark or heavy with dense shadow.

This is my home, and I love it. Nothing will ever chase me out. Not while Arthur, George, and Fred call this place home, too.

Just to let you all know they’re not their actual names – I have no idea what they were called in life, but this is what I call them. Well, I can’t call them my three ghosts all the time, can I?
