Toxic Agency

It was his dream job. He’d vied for years on the social and political laddder to reach the top, and as he walked into his pristine corner office he knew he’d finally made it. He was at the pinnacle of success, and he couldn’t be more proud.

He had made it, but even at the top, he was still a junior partner, and he needed to prove himself and keep the place he’d worked so hard to earn. He was up for the task, and ready to prove his worth to all that worked there.

He gathered his papers, beamed with self-assurance, and pressed the button on the gleaming elevator to ride it all the way to the top floor–he couldn’t wait for his first meeting.

Collaboration he reminded himself. Meeting is too narrow of a term. We are changing lives here!

He bounced on the balls of his feet as he waited for the doors to open. He rushed inside, and was eager to see how the other half lived up on the top.

He leaned against the back wall, and the doors clanged shut with more force than he was expecting. There was no music to be had, and the elevator groaned with the speed of the elevator’s acceleration.

His exhilaration turned to fear–what was going on!

The floors rushed on and on, and his heart hammered in his throat.

As abrubtly as it all started it came to an end. The doors slid open and he stepped onto the top floor with weak knees and shaking hands. But this floor gave him no comfort. It was dark treacherous, and not at all what he expected to see.

He crept away from the elevator and started searching frantically for a way to gey back down to the floors he was comfortable with. He no longer felt safe up here. Was this really how he wanted his dream to go?

He darted down the hallway and came to dead end after dead end.

There was no escape!

He saw a light ahead of him, charged head long into it.

His world went black as laughing and cheers erupted around him.

“Such a shame,” a voice said. “He had so much potential. At least it won’t be a total waste. The energy stores will gladly accept his sacrifice.”
