Impasse or New Beginning

She’d given him an ultimatum, but he just stood there in stunned silence for a moment.

How had things deteriorated so badly and yet he was completely unaware of all of it?

Yes, if he thought about it he could admit she was unhappy, but he’d given her everything she could want.

That should have been enough…

She didn’t take kindly to that assertion, and he couldn’t understand why.

Tears glinted in her eyes, and her head slumped.  To him she looked defeated, but this was a relationship, not a war.

“You act like everything we’ve been through was worth nothing,” he said.

“It’s always about you,” she said. “There is no sense talking to you.”

He shrugged as she walked into the kitchen and put his on his head headphones to play games.

She smiled as the warm aroma of brownies filled the apartment. She filled a plate and brought it over to him.

“Want some brownies?” She asked. “For old times sake?”

He barely looked up and shoveled some cookies into his mouth without even uttering a word of thanks.

She grabbed her keys, bag, and turned her back on him.

She heard a thump as she was closing the door and walked away down the hall as a free woman.

No one else would ever have to suffer as she had again.
