Rising Against the Tide

She stared with longing as the waves crashed against the cliffs and broke along the shore. The land was her home, but she knew she was destined for so much more.

She’d always felt out of place confined behind four walls. From her earliest memories she wanted to be outside and explore. Then her family moved here, and she had discovered the sea.

Her true home.

Even years later her parents begged her to stay away from the surf. The sea was dangerous–countless shipwrecks littered the ocean floor just off shore.

She could be caught up and never be seen again.

She told them time after time that she was meant to be a part of the sea–it called to her. She was a strong swimmer too, and she would be safe in it’s watery embrace.

Her argument went unheard and she grew sullen. Now, she spent her days staring out at the forbidden depths, wondering why something so beautiful would cause so much fear in others.

Her mother called to her from the porch. She would have to be confined once again until everyone in the house was asleep.

As the moon rose and bathed the sea in silver, she climbed from her window, and ran on silent feet to the water’s edge. She’d done as everyone asked and all that brought was disappointment.

Now, she was going to do things her way.

She took a deep breath, stretched out her shoulders and walked out into the surf.

As she moved deeper into the water a silver mist swirled around her, and her human legs were replaced with an iridescent, gleaming tail.

Suddenly, everything clicked into place. She was home and free.
