12 Days of Christmas…Fear

Day #9: Zealous Anticipation by Elizabeth Averay

Swallowing back the pain I gather myself together to try again to find the exit. It’s not easy, as the bloodred warning lights strobe constantly making it hard to focus on anything.

Making my way as quietly as possible I limp to a door to see yet another long hallway with at least a dozen doors along it. Halfway down I find an unlocked door. I open it, easing my way through and holding my breath.

No one is inside.

Sagging with relief I shut and lock the door behind me. Searching the cupboards against the wall I find a taser, but no charge to it. Any nothing else in this room is of any use.

Shit.

What now? Going back to the door I freeze as the handle partly turns, but thankfully the lock holds.

Who – or what – tried the door lopes away leaving an icy sensation behind.

Wishing I was anywhere but here I brace myself after a few minutes and unlock and slowly open the door. The hall is empty.

Trying the other doors, none are unlocked but the stairwell door is creaking open enough so I can poke my head through the gap. The strobing light makes it impossible to tell if anything is here. Taking the stairs all the way down to the ground floor with nothing happening except my imagination running wild again I check the hall outside the door.

All of these doors down here are wide open.

Gulping with dread, I move down the hall, hearing something coming down the stairs behind me. I dart into the closest room – it’s a classroom with one large cupboard in the corner behind the door. Climbing into it I pull the door shut. I am able to see thanks to a small gap in the wood.

A strange shape goes by, about five feet in height, long straggly hair and covered in fur. The stench coming from it is like rotting corpses in a heatwave.

Silently gagging, I wait out the thing. It finally leaves, though somehow the stench has gotten worse.

I wait a few more minutes, but pain or no pain I must get out of here. So do I just that. Racing around a corner I see the doors to the gym.

I fly through them, and once inside slither to a stop. The icy sensation is all over the gymnasium. Seeing nothing untoward I spy the exit. Hobbling over to it, I try the handle but no luck. I turn around to seek another way out.

The icy feeling intensifies.

A large boulder-shape with short arms and legs and no obvious head comes in and spots me, lumbers over and takes my arm.

Then the stench really hits. The overwhelmingly smelly thing lumbers into the room. For the first time I see its face: long fangs, black eyes, yellow skin with large purple scabs dotted over its face and neck. It opens its mouth, exposing a dark green tongue covered in fuzz.

The creature breathes its foul breath over me.

Looking down at the scene on the floor I realise its breath has killed me. But I can get out now, get away from this horrid place…
