12 Days of Christmas…Fear: Day 12

One Day More

Her heart thudded in her chest–she felt she might die from the weight of the anticipation. She didn’t understand why she’d decided to do this to herself again, but it happened every year. She was a glutton for punishment, and she’d freely admit it.

The Organization didn’t demand it of her, but she expected it of herself. To many, this day would be like any other, but she knew for her it meant so much more. Tomorrow she would gain another rank, and get that much closer to the power she craved.

She’d paid in blood, and was happy to do it. It meant her loyalty was real, and that her promotion was justified.  She’d earned her rank, and was so proud that she’d become the youngest member in history to do so. It was one more check mark on the list of her life. So, now she’d be on to bigger and better things.

She stepped from her house with a lightness in her step that belied security in her position. A sharp whistle stopped her in her tracks, and two hooded figures approached her.

“Come with us,” the first one said and grabbed her roughly by the shoulder.

She looked at them perplexed, but she willing went with them, and and allowed them to shove her into a waiting car.

“What is this all about?” She asked. “The ceremony isn’t until tomorrow.”

The silence hung heavy in the air, and the car turned out of the city and to a remote location. The hooded figures said nothing until the car stopped  along the side of the road. They stepped out of the car, and dragged her out with them.

“There won’t be a ceremony for you tomorrow,” the second figure said. “You’re dangerous, and we’ve been sent to deal with you.”

Her heart started to pound as they pulled pistols from under their cloaks.

“I’m loyal,” she said. “I’m an asset!”

“That’s the problem,” they said. “You’re loyal to the wrong people!”

They raised their guns and fired. She collapsed to her knees and bled out in the grass.

The cloaked figures walked away with a hard glint to their eyes. They wouldn’t allow the Organization anymore power. There was a new power-player in town.
