An accelerant wouldn’t cause discolouration in fire; nor would hazardous chemicals – though, if it were the result of that, I’d already be in serious trouble.
The smart thing to do would be to trip back down the uneven hill – away from the flames – yet before I realised what I was doing, my feet were again dragging me toward it. Stumbling along like a newborn foal, mesmerised by the feral beauty of flames licking the sky, my only thought was to find the source of the fire. A foolish quest? No doubt – yet in that moment, with flakes of ash showering over me, my throat burning, lungs straining, legs wobbling, and eyes streaming, it was all that mattered.
The only thing that made sense.
