Day #15 – Amber:
My limbs were wobbly, my lungs heavy from inhaling smoke and ash, but my will was strong. It needed to be – I had nothing else right now.
The weapons were secured to the wall, most high enough that they were just out of my reach. But that would not stop me. I needed to arm myself, I needed to be prepared for…something. Anything.
Anyone.
Edging toward the nearest item to my right, I strained my ears listening for even the slightest sound that someone was nearing this room while my eyes were fixed to the first streak of gleaming metal. Stretching, right up on to my tiptoes with one hand braced against the wall, I reached. Arm shaking, heart thundering so loud I knew it must be heard halfway across the planet, my fingertips brushed the underside of the curved metal.
Come on, come on!
After far too much time failing, I summoned the last of my determination and surged higher than I’d previously managed. My fingers brushed the sweep of the hook, pushed it up, dislodged it from its peg and brought it crashing down to the floor.
No! I wanted to catch it, but my reflexes kicked in and I darted back and watched in horror as the weapon clattered loudly to the floor.
