Spook-tober 2025: Day 4

Unwanted Guest

I have seen things for as long as I can remember. Things others would say didn’t exist—spirits.

Most of the time they just pass through. I answer a few questions and they go on their way without disruption or extended interaction.

But, Benny, Benny is different.

HE WON’T LEAVE!

I’ve tried everything, and he will not go!

He’s there when I wake up, he’s there when I go to sleep, and on particularly bad days he haunts my dreams…

I’m at my whit’s end with him, and it’s ruining my life!

My co-workers won’t even speak to me, customers avoid me, and I’ve been passed over at the grocery store as if I wasn’t even there.

I can’t function like this, and Benny acts like it’s the most wonderful thing in the world!

I came home after an exasperating day, threw my keys down on the counter, and glared at Benny who sprawled out on the couch grinning at me.

“This is all your fault!” I said. “You caused this! Just leave me alone.”

He sat up and chuckled. “You still haven’t figured it out?”

I stared at him the blood pulsing in my ears. “What are you talking about?” I asked.

He shook his head and sighed. “This happens every time with people like you.” he said. “Don’t you remember the party?”

I shook my head, but then things began to click into place…

“No…no…this can’t be right,” I said. “I came home, I’ve gone to work…”

“And, I’ve been here,” he said. “Nothing has been the same since that night…”

I held my face in my hands before peering through my fingers at him.

“Does that mean I’m stuck with you?”

He laughed and walked toward me. “What if the answer was yes?”

I crumpled to the floor and shook my head and in disbelief.

“How did I end up in hell?”
