Spook-tober 2025: Day 4

Unwanted Guest

Leo Driver

There was no invitation for me, but I arrived anyway. It wasn’t much a party, yet these people treated it that way. There wasn’t even any cake!

Whose birthday was it? Hm? Oh! It’s not a birthday? What kind of party is this then?

I didn’t see a lot of human’s here, at least not obvious ones. I have asked who these creatures are, but they refer to themselves as “costumes.”

Strange.

They don’t look like costumes to me—instead they look like cats, monsters, and undead! How could they refer to themselves as any other way than that?

Were costumes expected here? Gosh! I feel silly for not wearing one! Though, no one’s mad at me for that. Do they think I’m a costume too?

I think I quite enjoy this weird party! There’s food—I can take as much as I want. People like talking to me instead of running away screaming, and I get to partake in these fun games they have!

“There’s a costume contest happening tonight.” A Zombie Clown told me while I was scarfing down some apples I snagged with my mouth from a barrel. “You should participate! You could probably win with that costume of yours!”

“Ok,” I replied with a nod. “How do I do that?”

Then, the Zombie Clown showed me—it was easier than I thought! No rituals, just a simple, “I want to join,” and that’s it! Well, I did have to give my name. When I did, they laughed at me. Why? My name is not that hard to understand, is it?

Before I knew it, it was time for the contest, and I was impressed with what I saw.

There were all these people, and a pretty Siren was there too! She ultimately made it all worth it. Too bad she didn’t win. I wanted to give her my medal, but she refused.

Oh! Yeah! I also won first place and got this cool medal! It was made of glass, but it was still cool!

After everything was said and done, I went to the Siren and told her how pretty she was. And, to my surprise, she didn’t refer to herself as a costume!

“Belvedere, a fitting name for you, hm?” She said to me and I felt my heart flutter.

“Adamaris is a lovely name as well,” I answered with a smile.

She chuckled.

From then on, every year we would meet at these parties—hanging out chittering at each other.

Last year we left a party together and…

Well, you can guess the rest from here!
