Breaking Waves
Leo Driver
I’m drowning. I’ve been crying, but nothing comes out, only bubbles that pop just belore the surface.
The waves were especially cruel tonight, the journey was smooth sailing the fortnight before this dreadful winter night.
The day before was spent in victory of another successful trip, especially after sinking an opposing ship that sought out our treasures we gained along the way.
We cheered, drank, and sang shanties until the sun had set and even then we still fooled around until the rum tucked us into bed.
Then the next day came with grey clouds greeting us instead of the cool light of the sun. I think we all knew then that fate was brewing before us.
I don’t know, let alone remember, everything we did to anger the Gods, but it was deserved down to the grueling second of our trip to meet Davy Jones himself.
I’m sure we don’t even get the time of day to join his collection in the rotting locker in the depths of Hell.
The threat leered over us the entire day, a constant neminder of what was about to snag us from right out of the water.
In my foolish hung over stupor, I tried to console my crew, telling them that we will make it through, We’ve gone through worse, We can’t stop now! We’ll keep fighting no matten what!
This was the biggest lie I could’ve said in those moments. Not even I believed what fell out of my mouth while the sky darkens around us.
The storm above us never came, but below the boat was another story.
Even in the dead of night, shadows could be seen lurking, surveying our vessel, taking its time to decide if we were worth the effort.
We prayed that the beast would pass us by despite those prayers landing on deaf ears.
Once the first tentacle broke through the surface was when our story came to a close.
It was quick and violent, the ship being torn to shreds and my crew being pulled into the monster’s beak one by one, with me being left for last.
And so here I was, trying to swim back to the surface while the darkness envelopes me. A click of a closed maw was the last thing I saw.
My consciousness shuts off like a light under the pressure of being swallowed.
