Spook-tober 2025, Day #10

Paranormal, by Amber Averay

Something is following me. I turn around, but see nothing. Just the empty street, the night’s darkness weakly held at bay beneath each flickering yellow streetlight we pass under.

A few steps ahead, my sister and mother laugh and dissect the cheesy movie we just saw. They’re happy, oblivious to the weird sensation of eyes watching. My skin prickles, the hair on the back of my neck stands up. I absently scratch at my wrist, noticing the second hand on my watch ticking backwards.

Weird.

I shake my hand, and the watch just stops.

‘Hey, does anybody feel weird?’ I call out, jogging to catch up to the others.

Mum smiles over her shoulder. ‘Only because my son is too cool to walk beside his mother.’

I wince, but she laughs and resumes talking with my sister.

My footsteps slow. A low hum fills my ears, pressure building like I’m deep underwater. Something warm drops to my shoulder.

It’s blood.

My head fills with a weird buzzing, like a swarm of bees has flooded my skull. Ahead, Mum and Jade are oblivious, Mum getting her car keys out and Jade checking out her phone.

I pass beneath a flickering streetlight, and it pops, fizzing to darkness. I squeak out a manly yelp as a blinding light fills my vision. The last thing I see is Mum and Jade turning back to me…

Then I’m looking at them on a screen. Strange chatter fills the air, and as I watch my family glance about for me I’m already hundreds of thousands of kilometres away, racing through the galaxy, and something sharp pierces my neck.

Darkness descends.
