Shadow

Shadow

The sun was just peeking over the hill as she pulled out her keys and locked the door for the last time. It was a bitter sweet moment, but she was happy none the less. It was astounding how much her life changed in the last twenty four hours.

She pulled the key off the ring and slipped it under the mat. Her heart pounded against her ribs, but she felt free.

She turned her back on her old life, and was more than ready to face the future. But, she couldn’t escape her past so easily.

“How dare you,” he said stepping out from the corner of the house. “You thought everything  would just disappear?”

She froze, but she wasn’t going to back down.

“They said you were dead,” she said.

“They were wrong,”He raised a gun and pulled the hammer back. “I’m not the one they were talking about. March.”

She raised her hands and walked slowly down  the front steps. Her confidence evaporated as she stared down the barrel of the gun. Her head drooped lower with each step.

“I knew this was coming,” she said. “No matter what, the life will always find you. Just make it quick.”

“You don’t deserve mercy,” he said. “You showed no mercy, and neither will we.”

A single tear rolled down her cheek as cold steel was pressed against her temple and the trigger pulled.

But, now she was free.
