Barrage

A cool breeze caressed her face when she stepped out the front door of her house. She felt like she’d been inside for days. Life had been busy, busier than even she could have anticipated.

Her mother called late in the week before, asking to come down for a visit. She initially agreed, but she warned her mother that along with pressing deadlines for work; she also had her best friend’s wedding to prepare for. This meant that her mother would need to find entertainment while she was busy. They would get together a few times for dinner and a movie.

Her mother agreed, saying she had a friend in the next town over, and she was hoping to visit her too. She wouldn’t be sitting around the house waiting for her daughter to come home. She assured her if her friend was busy, there were plenty of other activities she could do.

It was comforting to a point, so she couldn’t find a justifiable argument against the visit. But, as soon as she hung up the phone, the cold hand of doubt dragged its nails across the pit of her stomach.

She headed straight for her desk, pulled up her work calendar, and rearranged what meetings and responsibilities she could. What she couldn’t change, she used what free time she had to get it done.

She called her friend to warn her about the visit as well.

“Mom’s coming down for a visit,” she said. “She says she has things she’s planning to do…”

“But, those things might fall through at the last minute?” her friend finished. “Don’t worry, I have a plan!”

She listened to what her friend had to say. She probably knew her mom as well as she did. She ended the call with a smile on her face. Now, all that was left, was to wait for her mother’s arrival.

She was exhausted but excited as she picked up her mother from the airport.  They talked about the flight, the weather, and other minor topics.

Until…

“I hope you’re ready to spend the week with me,” she said. “There is so much we can do!”

She didn’t miss a beat.

“Oh, I am,” she said. “We have dresses to pick up, bouquets to make, and even some wedding cake to try. Ash thought you wouldn’t mind helping out, since you’re here.”

Her mother was silent for a moment.

“I, uh, well, I thought it was just going to be the two of us,” she said. “I’ll call Catherine when we get home. You and Ash are better suited to this wedding business. Don’t you think?”

She laughed and squeezed her mother’s hand.

“If you insist,” she said.

“I do,” she said. “You girls enjoy yourselves.”

And with that they both got to spend their visit just how it was meant to be. It just took some quick thinking and a barrage of activity to make it happen.
