When he was a child he’d seen movies and plays his parents thought he was too young to view. They thought he was asleep, but he’d creep quietly down the stairs and watch from the hallway. It was a wonderous sight to behold.
The sets were always breathtaking, the actors so polished. He knew from the age of ten this was something he was going to do for a living one day.
No, he didn’t want to be an actor. He was too shy for that, but to see his work performed and his name up in lights! What a glorious thing that would be!
From that day forward he read everything he could, went nowhere without paper and pencil, and he took an interest in clubs and school activities that might not have captured his interest before.
He knew that his dream was a big one, it wasn’t going to be easy, but he was going to work at it little by little until he could make it happen.
Finally, the summer before he started high school he read about something he just could not let pass him by.
Local community theater is hosting a competition for middle and high school playwrights. Submit your best three act play for a chance to see it performed and an internship spot for the next season.
He was excited and nervous. He had a play he was Longing to submit, but he was worried that it wasn’t going to be good enough. This was going to be his first big test.
“I don’t know why you’re so worried,” his mom said. “They will pick your play or they won’t. Is this your only shot?”
He laughed. “No,” he said. It’s just the first. I’m scared.
“Don’t be,” she said. “It’s a good experience and you’ll learn as you go.”
He nodded and hurried up to his room to work on his play. He was still nervous, because nothing his mom said was going to change that. But, he wasn’t scared of the outcome anymore. First steps were just that, first steps.
He waited eagerly, as the summer drew closer, to hear news about the contest.
An email arrived saying he’d made it to the semi-finals, and that all four plays were being considered for production.
Of course he was thrilled. The first steps were a success. And with that milestone met, just like any kid, he decided to enjoy the rest of his summer vacation without worry.
If he got the internship it would be great, but if he didn’t, he had taken his first step. It wouldn’t be as scary next time.
