I came to this place full of hope and possibility, but the veneer soon started to chip and crack as real life set in.
Gone were the days where someone could travel to a new place with only a few dollars in their pockets and just the clothes on their back. Real life took much more planning, and unfortunately, I hadn’t taken the time to plan. I had a place to stay put it would soon drain what little saving I had. I needed a plan, and I needed one fast.
I showed up to work with the most winning smile I could muster, paid close attention to what my boss and coworkers talked about. I didn’t want to admit that I knew next to nothing about my new town or the cost of living that it required to live there. I spent my nights learning to cook, and searching the web for affordable places to live.
My days were spent networking and becoming every one’s favorite person. I had a lot of ground to make up, and the last thing I wanted was for my efforts to come off as disingenuous or entitled. I hadn’t put in the prep work before, so I had to make sure I did it now.
Even with my best efforts it took time, and was slower going than I would have liked, but slowly the pieced fell into place.
I Found a new more affordable place to live, started to gain recognition at work, and even started to build a small network of friends and acquaintances. When I made the choice to leave home, I’d been deluded in thinking that I’d have everything on lock within a month. I look back now and laugh. Everything would have fallen to pieces and I would be just another failed restart. If I hadn’t thrown everything in when I did, I never would have achieved what I’d wanted in a month or ever.
I’m far less recklessly impetuous now. I plan, I prep, and even then, I know just how much work is needed to accomplish things. If you don’t have to go careening head long into something, you will be, once things start spiraling out of control. So, take it from me:
Take things slow, work toward your goals, and little by little they will take shape. Luck is nice, but a plan is better.
