Not a Lucky Penny
It was an inconsequential thing, something so ordinary, anyone would be fooled by its innocent presence. Any trouble this item caused would be written off as coincidental, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
She was feeling gloomy as she walked down the street. Once she saw the shiny penny lying in the road, a small smile curved across her lips. She scooped it up, slipped it into her pocket, and hoped her day was turning around.
But, her day didn’t improve. If anything, it got infinitely worse.
Rain soaked through her clothes, mud spattered her shoes, and her cellular phone fell and smashed on the pavement. In twenty short minutes, her gloomy day turned into pure misery.
As she neared the crossing for work her face was covered in grime, and her eyes were blinded by tears. She just wanted to get into work, freshen up, and maybe catch a ride home for some clean clothes.
She stepped off of the curb, and never saw the car coming…
The penny flew from her pocket, spun a few times, rolled into the grate, and disappeared. A faint smell of gunpowder was all that remained, and no one was the wiser.
