Into the Beyond

She couldn’t believe how fast the last year had gone by. So many things changed, but a lot stayed the same. This didn’t surprise her so much as what was different, but it came on so unexpectedly. Everything was part of her normal now, but that always hadn’t been the case.

The Lights appeared over her town in mid-February. They’d all gone to bed normally and woken up to these lights filling the night sky. It wasn’t until the lights appeared over a few major cities that it was soon discovered those lights were attached to thousands and thousands of
invisible spacecraft.

Panic grew, but the spacecraft never moved. Panic subsided, but the landscape of the world changed. The skied were never dark, life continued on as normal, but an undercurrent
of trepidation hung in the air as readily as the motionless ships.

She too was concerned, but what could anyone do to fight against so many alien ships? Until the ships made their move, there was really nothing to be worried about. To be honest, she enjoyed sitting out in an open field watching the lights on clear nights.

It was on one of these nights, only a few minutes before heading home, everything changed.
A brilliant, white beam emanated from the bottom of one of the ships. A pale-skinned humanoid stepped out of the light and approached her.

Her mouth dropped open in shock. She was frozen in place and speechless. Her heart was pounding, but she couldn’t convince her body to move forward or flee.

She should have taken more care because she didn’t need to flaunt her recklessness so openly.

The alien reached out to her, and she marched forward. Her mind went blank us she floated into the air. She was the first of thousands to be taken that night
