Chance
The deep fried, sickly sweet smell mixed with buttered popcorn was both nostagic and alluring at the same time. She was no longer a child, but the sights and sounds of the midway on a crisp autumn night made her heart pound.
She was on fire tonight, and soon her arms were overloaded with plushes of various shapes, colors and sizes–she hardly spent a thing. It all worked like magic!
Stall after stall issued their prizes to her with a mere flick of the wrist. Her grin widened as her arms overflowed and the money replenished on its own accord. It was a brilliant night to be at the carnival.
She chose the lustrous pale-blue dragon with the green eyes as her favorite, slipped him onto her shoulders and started passing out the spoils of her victorious night to passing children, teens, and couples.
She had gotten away with her plan, had fun doing it, and made other peoples’ nights in the process.
What could be better…
…How about one more round?
As she turned to head back to the midway she felt a tap on her shoulder. She spun around and was faced by a greasy gap-toothed smile.
She gave him a sweet smile and turned to leave. His large hand clamped down on her shoulder and she yelped in pain.
“You thought your kind deeds could undo the fact that you robbed this carnival of hundreds of dollars over the last hour,” he said. “We were planning on letting you leave and mark you for the future. But, you were going to try it again. That will not do.”
She shrugged. “Come on, it was only a bit of fun,” she said. “This is the firsr time it actually worked. The kids were thrilled. I can return the money.”
He shook his head and began to steer her away from the midway and to the dark corner of the carnival.
“You tried and lost,” he said. “Now you will repay your debt where you will be of least danger and the most use.”
She saw the sign for the sideshow and her heart pounded as she felt her body shift and change around her.
He grinned and pinned a new sign on the wall:
