12 Days of Christmas…Fear: Day 1

Silent Night

The darkness shrouded the window, and the night was impossibly black. She wanted her own place–she craved it even, but being alone for the first time in her life set her on edge.

The building she lived in was full of commotion, noise, families all around, but she’d never felt more alone.  Her voice echoed against the empty walls and her belongings were still in boxes. She climbed on to her now too big bed and pulled her knees up to her chin.

She’d dreamed about what it would be like to be alone, but she missed the chaos of her family and the desire to want her own space. Reality was so empty and nothing at all like she imagined, but she’d made this choice–she would adjust.

“I want to be settled in now!” She demanded of the empty air. “I don’t want to be alone and miserable too.”

“I’m here,” an unseen voice said. “You’re not alone.”

She screamed and backed up against the wall–as far from the voice as she could manage. She was terrified, but curious too.

“Who are you?” She whispered.

“You know me, Dear, I’ve been beside you your whole life.”

She decided not to ask anymore questions. It didn’t matter who was with her. Just knowing she was no longer alone was enough for her.

The dark shadow in the corner chuckled to itself and smiled. It would be a good night once the lights went out.
