A Fortnight of Lust: Day 2

Beach

He was a small child when he first saw her. He was spending the summer at his grandparents’ beach house. His parents thought the sea air would do him some good, and to get away from the bustle of the city for a while .

When he was little he understood little of the reasoning behind it, but he felt special being wisked away to the coast every summer, and he liked having something to do right outside of the door rather than having to walk blocks to the park.

Still, the beach was more quiet than the city, and there weren’t that many kids his age to play with, so he spent many afternoons playing in the sand with his bucket and pail. But, after his sixth sand castle  of the day he turned to go back inside–he was bored.

“Hey, don’t go! I’ve been watching,” a voice said. “I want to play.”

He looked over and saw the flick of a tail, and a girl who looked about his age bobbed in the waves a few yards in front of him.

He wasn’t sure what he was seeing, but he was lonely, and she wanted to play.

“I was going to go inside, but I’ll stay little longer,” he said. “Can you play in the sand? I’m not allowed in the water.”

She laughed. “I’ll be right there,” she said. “Don’t look!”

He squeezed his eyes tight and a few minutes later he felt a tap on his shoulder. He opened his eyes and smiled at the girl with blonde messy curls.

“Do you want the shovel or the pail?” he asked.

She shrugged. “The pail, I guess,” she said. “You’ll have to show me what to do.”

He nodded and patted the sand beside him. He knew she wasn’t human, but she was friendly, and he didn’t care. Now neither of them would be lonely, and this friendship would last for many years to come.

He kept her secret, and she kept him as a friend. It was a perfect match.
